Pivoting to Reality: Why I Stopped Building for Overseas Markets and Solved a Real Problem at Home

At the beginning of this year, I set out with a grand vision: build an international personal finance app.

It sounded like a great project on paper, until reality hit. Building financial software for foreign markets means taking on an overwhelming amount of localized domain knowledge. I spent nearly six months just trying to understand how US mortgages, tax structures, and banking systems actually work.

Trying to build a product for a culture you didn’t grow up in feels like coding in the dark. Eventually, I realized I was wasting time trying to solve abstract problems I didn’t truly understand.

It was time to stop guessing and pivot back to what I already knew.

The Real Problem Right in Front of Me

Around the same time, my girlfriend decided to leave her job and restart her e-commerce business here in Thailand.

Her previous attempt at e-commerce collapsed two years ago for a simple, common reason: inventory management and expense tracking were an absolute nightmare. She loves sourcing, marketing, and selling products, but she genuinely hates math and manual spreadsheet entry. Because stock and costs were never properly logged, we never actually knew if the business was making a profit or quietly bleeding money.

With her getting back into selling, that exact same problem was waiting for her on day one.

She didn’t need another complex dashboard with 50 input fields that feel like taking a university exam. She just needed an automated employee—a reliable system that fits naturally into her daily routine, takes plain chat messages or photos of supplier invoices, handles the math securely in the background, and keeps the stock accurate.

That was the lightbulb moment that created Talk2Stock.

Real Validation from Day One

I know I’m on the right track this time because the product had a real user since day one.

Instead of launching to crickets or relying on hypothetical user personas, I get to watch a non-tech business owner use the software in a live commercial environment every single day. The roadmap isn’t driven by assumptions anymore; it’s driven by real-time feedback, edge cases, and actual workflow friction.

From Local Validation to Neighboring Borders

While Thailand is our starting proving ground, the vision doesn’t stop here. The plan is to scale to our neighboring countries across Southeast Asia very soon.

Cross-border import retail is a massive regional powerhouse. Sellers in Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia deal with the exact same headaches: sourcing goods internationally, managing chaotic inventory through social chat commerce, and hating manual spreadsheets just as much.

Because Talk2Stock is built around a flexible conversational chat interface rather than country-specific financial tax logic, the core workflow translates seamlessly across borders. I’m genuinely looking forward to expanding and doing business with our regional neighbors.

The Next Frontier: Distribution

With the core engine working, validated at home, and structured to scale, the next big challenge isn’t engineering—it’s distribution.

Building a product that solves a real problem for someone right next to you gives you the ultimate foundation. Now, it’s all about putting that solution in front of the millions of other sellers across SEA who are still stuck wrestling with spreadsheets.
